April 24th John Jopes Rogers (Death)

Mawnan – born John Jope Rogers (1816 – 1880) represented Helston in the Commons between 1859 and 1865 and was the owner of the Penrose House (pictured right) and estate, just south of Helston,  which includes Loe Pool (pictured left as painted by Lamorna Birch 8th June) which is the largest natural, freshwater, lake in Cornwall.

President of the Helston Savings Bank and President of The Royal Institution of Cornwall (February 5th), Rogers was educated at Trinity College, Oxford and was called to the Bar in 1841.

Rogers is best remembered for his biography of John Opie (16thMay) and for publishing a catalogue of his works.
