Wreck of HMS Colchester (1704)

There have been six ships named HMS Colchester.  The third, launched in 1664 was a 48-gun ship which was denoted a 4th rate frigate under the navy’s ships classification system.  This meant that it was not a frontline battleship (so not a so-called ‘ship of the line’) but was used for support and for transport.  She foundered at Whitesand Bay (Sennen Cove) on 16th January 1704 with the loss of approximately one hundred lives.

The picture above shows an unattributed painting of HMS Colchester.
