There have been six ships named HMS Colchester.  The third, launched in 1664 was a 48-gun ship which was denoted a 4^th rate frigate under the navy’s ships classification system.  This meant that it was not a frontline battleship (so not a so-called ‘ship of the line’) but was used for support and for transport.  She foundered at Whitesand Bay (Sennen Cove) on 16^th January 1704 with the loss of approximately one hundred lives.
